No Business with Arizona

This Article is about Arizonas' new immigration law.
“The Austin City Council decided Thursday to end business and travel ties with the state of Arizona to protest a new state law that will allow law enforcement officers there to detain people they suspect are in the country illegally. There was little discussion before the resolution passed unanimously . Two people showed up to speak in favor of it; none spoke against. Martinez said Thursday that he wanted to be clear with the public that the resolution would only cease city business ties with the state of Arizona, not businesses located there. Other cities are considering or have already enacted similar measures. On Wednesday, for example, Los Angeles approved a ban on future business with Arizona. Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer and other supporters have said the law, which will take effect later this summer, is needed to deal with a crisis in illegal immigration that the federal government has ignored.”

Dealing with immigration NATION wide is a difficult task and always has been. The funny thing about America is it that on some level WERE ALL IMMAGRANTS. I do understand that it’s about taking the proper measures to get jobs here and become a legal citizen but some of the things states do is ridicules. I also know that part of the problem with immigration is that drug cartels are involved and often mob and gang wars. It sad how some of those people travel for weeks get here just to end up dying or raped and abused or exploited. Immigrations laws are in place as much for their safety as it is for our safety. I feel bed that some of those people come from bad lives just to live in nightmares. I also think holding whoever you assume is an immigrant in custody is one of the more ridicules laws a state has come up with. Though I do believe states have the right to try and find what works best for them, Arizona may want to give this one up because cities like Austin are cancelling all business with the state but not with businesses located there.

All Legal Drugs?

According to an Article written by Gordonskene in 1971 California made an attempt to legalize all drugs and put a state or national Tax on them but sell them for cheap. The PBS program The Advocates devoted their hour a week to just that subject. The argument for legalization was made by Joseph Oteri.

"Joseph Oteri(arguing For legalization): “As extreme as our proposition may sound, we believe that we" can show that by legalizing all drugs, you will have the following results: There will be less crime because drugs will be cheap enough so that addicts will not have to steal money in order to purchase them. The tax free criminal drug monopoly will be destroyed because of their inability to compete with cheap legal drugs. There will be fewer addicts because the forbidden fruit temptation of drug use will be diminished by its openness and the drug subculture, which makes drugs available will disappear. There will be fewer deaths from overdoses because the strength of drugs will be controlled by Federal standards. Hepatitis cases will be diminished because it will no longer be criminal to possess needles and syringes and users will have sterile equipment to use. But more importantly, an adult’s right to be let alone, his right to determine for himself what is good for him and not to be forced to accept the moral judgments of society as they relate to his private conduct demand that he have the right to use drugs if he chooses to do so.”"

Though he does make a good case and the article also made funny points. To me it doesn’t should like a half-bad idea. Most of the time people do try to do what is TABOO or forbidden that’s part of the reason our teenage pregnancy rate has SKY ROCKETED. Legalization would bring in more money for the states that were willing to sell and tax it as well as kill the taboo honestly I don't think it’s a half bad idea though I don't think all drugs should be legalized but some surly wouldn’t hurt our country anymore then were already hurting. I think kids would be less likely to sell their medications for money and under Dr. Supervision addiction could be watched for or kept off the map. Also College and High School students who use anxiety or speed (ADHD & ADD) medications or even weed to help them relax and focus would be able to access those from their Dr. before tests or midterms or finals, but the question would be how would it change the name of the game? If drugs are legalized what would be considered enhancers? Does that mean it’s an unfair advantage for those people who had been diagnosed with things like ADHD and Anxiety Disorders? Over all the article was pretty short but I think it brought up interesting points and I also wonder unexpected outcomes would rear its ugly face.

Ban On Smoking for Public Health?

City Councilman John Clamp (for San Antonio) came out against the effort to get a smoking ban in Public Places like bars, bingo facilities, pool halls, game rooms, comedy clubs and restaurants in San Antonio, saying more regulation would drive business out of town and lead to layoffs in the service industry. Councilman Justin Rodriguez, who's sponsoring the effort, says Clamp's argument ignores the public health. Rodriguez believes the change will protect employees who currently work in smoke-filled environments. In the Article Clamp says that the smoking ban will lead to layoffs anyway and employees have a choice on where they work so if they didn’t want to deal with smoke don’t work n the service industry. Rodriguez believes that because of the economics’ current state people go where the work is and most of that is in the service industry and they shouldn’t have to give up health for a job or move half way across the state to find a job. Personally I agree with Councilman Justin Rodriguez because I’m allergic to a few things in cigarettes and I don’t want to have to deal with the smoke when I go to a restaurant with friends. Yes is may lead to a small drop for a short time but people will adjust and they may end up with more business from non-smokers and families that will help boost business. There shouldn’t be exemptions for places like bars, bingo facilities, pool halls, game rooms, comedy clubs and restaurants, just because they bring in an older crowed doesn’t mean they should be putting the majority of people up for health risks just because some people developed an addiction that they refuse to quit.

The "Texas Tea Party"

Governor Rick Perry told reporters on 15 of April that "Texans are fed up with federal tax policies, and might get so fed up that they decide they want to secede from the union", after he attended the anti-tax tea party rally in Austin. The funny thing is MOST of the people quoted in this article believe secession from the US is an actual option and it’s really not and hasn’t been an option since the civil war. All states who were part of the civil war can’t secede from the USA regardless of reasons. I believe Perry is just talking big game about things he seems to be ignorant about. What’s worse is that the college students who were asked about the topic said they honestly believed that secession is a very legitimate answer for Texas’ problems with federal government.
